Old Harrisonian David Sealy is afflicted with Syringomyelia.

Despite his brave demeanour, 61 year old David Sealy’s spirit is beginning to sag.

He’s been lying in a bed for over five years, afflicted with Syringomyelia (sear-IN-go-my-EEL-ya) a condition which has left him paralyzed. Syringomyelia (SM) is a disorder in which a cyst forms within the spinal cord. This cyst, called a syrinx, expands and elongates over time, destroying the center of the cord. Since the spinal cord connects the brain to the nerves in the extremities, this damage may result in pain, weakness, and stiffness in the back, shoulders, arms or legs. SM may also adversely affect sweating, sexual function and bladder and bowel control.

In David’s case it started with loss of muscle strength & coordination and has culminated in total paralysis. He has had two surgical procedures, the first in 2001 lasting 7 ½ hours and the last, a three hour surgery, in 2005. The operations were unsuccessful but there is perhaps one last chance.

To this end a group of his friends are endeavouring to raise BDS $35,000.00 for his rehabilitation. We have just held a fund-raising concert, which has realized just under $10,000, and we are appealing to the wider public for further assistance.

The following account has been established at the Barbados National Bank:

The David Sealy Medical Benefit Fund Account: 01789900

Cheques made out to the David Sealy Medical Fund may also be mailed to John Jones, c/o Guardian General Insurance, Collymore Rock or Ronnie Carrington, 4, Pelican Village Bridgetown.

Remember, just $35 each from 1000 people will meet out target.

Your support is greatly appreciated.
