Large turnout at OHS EGM
Extraordinary General Meeting
There was a well above average turnout at the OHS extraordinary general meeting held on Wednesday 17th February at 5:30 pm in the College Hall.
The meeting was called by the OHS Council to present for adoption a
revised constitution and name change. So was it the controversy around one of the suggested new names for OHS that brought the members out or could
it be that we are seeing a rekindling of a desire to admit that one attended Harrison College?
Whatever the reason the numbers attending significantly exceeded those recorded at any meeting held in the last six years. The discussion was lively and when it came to the vote the motion to change the name failed to achieve the required two-thirds majority by just four votes.
So then it was on to a somewhat less highly charged debate around the revised constitution probably because all the changes proposed sought to improve the existing constitution. The improvements included:
- Increasing period of notice to members from 14 to 21 days
- Introducing nominations for Council elections to be in advance of date
of AGM
- Enabling members to vote by proxy
- Setting up of four standing committees to assist the Council in the
successful operation of the OHS
After the President allowed all those who wanted to contribute to the debate to do so the motion to adopt the revised draft constitution to replace the current OHS constitution was put to the vote. This time the two-thirds majority was easily reached with some 96% of those present and entitled to vote casting their vote in favour.
So the OHS now has a modern up to date constitution under which it can plan to operate for continued growth.
Council meeting
At the first Council meeting following the EGM the OHS Council co-opted Dr. Roland Clarke to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation late last year of Mr. Montague Barrow, CBE, BSS. Roland joins Adrian Randall - President, Winston Crichlow – Senior Vice President, Tammi Pilgrim – Junior Vice President, Sandra Martindale – Secretary, Owen Springer – Treasurer, Stacia Burrowes, Wayne Forde and Cameron Sobers – Council members.
In line with the new constitution the Council duly elected the following to chair the four standing committees:
Membership: Mr. Cameron Sobers
Finance: Lt. Col. V. Owen Springer
Public Relations: Mr. Adrian Randall
Heritage: Ms. Tammi Pilgrim
